Description

CULTURAL RESISTANCE OR POETICS OF RESISTANCE? The title of this special issue, Poetics of Resistance, is also the name of a network of scholars and cultural producers. The network was founded in 2007 with the purpose of developing new analytical approaches for an understanding of the relationship between creativity, culture, and political resistance, in the context of neoliberal globalization, and from a perspective of committed scholarship. The founding members of the network felt that global neoliberal politics had created a situation in which the relationship between these three categories--creativity, the impact of neoliberalism, a committed position--became increasingly difficult to translate into practices of committed research and cultural production. This difficulty seemed to derive from a variety of reasons. One was that the term 'cultural resistance' seemed to hold rhetorical rather than analytical or descriptive power. In his introduction to the Cultural Resistance Reader, Stephen Duncombe unravels some of the diverse meanings that the term can take on. He suggests that we think of cultural resistance in terms of 'scales of resistance', which he equates with 'political engagement'. Duncombe suggests the existence of three scale measures: political self-consciousness, the social unit engaged in cultural resistance, and the results of cultural resistance. (2)
